Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach that is related to CBT and DBT. ACT gets its name, in part, from its focus on acceptance-based strategies. Core concepts include mindfulness and focusing on values, instead of focusing on the things that we don’t have. ACT provides a framework to uncover our core values and to work toward valued living in all that we do. Similar to CBT, ACT takes into account thoughts that get in the way and focuses on a concept called psychological flexibility. With psychological flexibility, we work toward being flexible in how we interact with our thoughts, rather than challenging or changing them. This approach is often achieved by a combination of acceptance and change strategies and implementing experiential and new skills to respond to thoughts and feelings.


ACT is useful in treating substance use, depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and trauma, as well as treatment of stress for individuals with medical conditions, such as terminal cancer, chronic pain, and type 2 diabetes. ACT has been used with success in reducing stigma and prejudice.

We are currently offering individual sessions in-person and via telehealth. All of our group offerings are virtual, with the exception of our adolescent IOP, which has rigorous policies and procedures in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
