WHAT HRT IS
Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) incorporates Awareness Training, which is designed to bring awareness to problematic repetitive behaviors in real time. We utilize new coping strategies that act as replacement strategies for the target behavior by using a multisensory approach called Competing Response Training. Next, we add in Relaxation Training to provide strategies to self-soothe and bring anxiety and other competing emotions down to a manageable level. HRT is often complemented with elements of mindfulness, DBT, and CBT.
WHAT HRT TREATS
HRT is a specialized treatment for Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair-pulling (trichotillomania), skin-picking (excoriation disorder), and other body-focused, repetitive behaviors, such as nail biting and lip chewing.
