Being A Friend
Some people have dreams of being a doctor, a constructor worker, or a teacher. While some of those were true for me, I ultimately felt called to become a therapist after learning the statistic that 21 soldiers die by suicide every day in my undergraduate entry level psychology class. This struck a chord with me as I felt that 21 is 21 too many for those willing to put their life on the line. Now I work with clients and families fighting for their lives every day. I understand that while not everyone can be a therapist, everyone can be a friend.
With this week being National Suicide Prevention Week I want to encourage you to reach out to those around you and check in on your friends and family . Sometimes it’s helpful to remind them you are there and care. Honestly, a smile or an encouraging word can change someone’s whole day. We all need a little more kindness and love in our world. This week into the coming month is the perfect opportunity to do that. You might not be a certified therapist, and you can be a certified friend by listening to others. Please do your best and listen and encourage others, as you never know what another person can be going through. If you or someone you love needs help, call the national suicide prevention hotline at 800-273-8255.
