NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS TURNED TO GOALS

Happy New Year!

One of the most common things to do during a new year is to make a resolution. Let’s be honest, most of the time it is about wanting to go to the gym and to be more healthy or for us to feel good. The definition of resolutions according to the Oxford dictionary is: a firm decision to do or not to do something. This gives the option for us to choose if we want to do something or not, it also gives us the opportunity to fail if we choose to forgo a resolution. What would it look like if we decided to not create a resolution, instead look at a goal for 2023?

In DBT treatment we base things off a Life Worth Living, not a resolution. Creating a life worth living is something we can hold on to for hope and get what we want out of life versus focusing on the negative of what we do not have or do not want.

Setting up a resolution as the opportunity for us to fail if we do not feel like we met our resolutions. How many times have you not met your resolution and then feel guilty for not doing so? This is why we do not have expectations in DBT, we work towards a goal. How different would your life look like in 2023 if you started to have goals for yourself that we can constantly work towards versus failing at a resolution.

For this year be creative in what you want your life to look like for this year and turn it into a goal versus a resolution.
