DBT Skills Classes

We offer DBT Skills classes for a range of age groups and areas of focus. The three areas of focus (Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness) are divided among 8-week modules with the first two weeks of each module focusing on Mindfulness skills. DBT Skills classes are offered throughout the year, module after module, to ensure all clients have opportunities to join.

*DBT skills classes are psycho-educational and not process-oriented.

Please Note: All participants must be currently seeing a therapist for individual weekly therapy to be eligible to attend skills class. The therapist does not have to be with Peachtree Comprehensive Health. New group members are required to complete a pre-registration intake assessment prior to the start of the selected module.

Registration for Interpersonal Effectiveness is now closed.

Interpersonal Effectiveness begins the week of December 2nd, 2024 and ends the week of February 2nd, 2025.

Skills classes will not be held the weeks of December 23rd and December 30th.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

  • Each module is 8-weeks long and classes meet once a week for two hours.

  • Classes are taught in a lecture based, educational format. The first half of class is used to review homework and skills from the week before. The second half of class is used to introduce new skills.

  • DBT skills class is based on teaching skills relating to the four modules of DBT (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness). The class is taught in a lecture format. In contrast, group therapy is based on sharing thoughts and feelings, frequently referred to as a “process group,” since you are processing your emotions. Although participants share some limited personal information, DBT skills group is not a process group. DBT skills class can sometimes bring up strong emotions surrounding the client and their experiences and although these emotions and experiences are valid and important, the time in DBT class is focused on learning new skills. Clients are encouraged to process these experiences and emotions with their individual therapists.

  • The Multi-Family class includes parents/caregivers and adolescents within the same class. This provides an opportunity to learn alongside your loved ones.
