DBT Skills Groups

We offer DBT Skills groups for a range of age groups and areas of focus. The three areas of focus (Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness) are divided among 8-week modules with the first two weeks of each module focusing on Mindfulness skills. DBT Skills groups are offered throughout the year, module after module, to ensure all clients have opportunities to join.

*DBT skills groups are psycho-educational and not process-oriented.

Please Note: All participants must be currently seeing a therapist for individual weekly therapy to be eligible to attend skills group. The therapist does not have to be with Peachtree Comprehensive Health. New group members are required to complete a pre-registration intake assessment prior to the start of the selected module.

Registration for our upcoming module, Distress Tolerance, is open!

The Distress Tolerance module will begin the week of February 17th and runs for 8 consecutive weeks.

Interpersonal Effectiveness began the week of December 2nd, 2024 and ends the week of February 2nd, 2025.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

  • Each module is 8-weeks long and groups meet once a week for two hours.

  • Groups are taught in a lecture based, educational format. The first half of group is used to review homework and skills from the week before. The second half of group is used to introduce new skills.

  • DBT Skills Group is based on teaching skills relating to the four modules of DBT (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness). The group is taught in a lecture format. In contrast, group therapy is based on sharing thoughts and feelings, frequently referred to as a “process group,” since you are processing your emotions. Although participants share some limited personal information, DBT skills group is not a process group. DBT skills group can sometimes bring up strong emotions surrounding the client and their experiences and although these emotions and experiences are valid and important, the time in DBT group is focused on learning new skills. Clients are encouraged to process these experiences and emotions with their individual therapists.

  • The Multi-Family group includes parents/caregivers and adolescents within the same class. This provides an opportunity to learn alongside your loved ones.
